"While I share the desire to see fair and comprehensive provision put in place to support both mothers and fathers as they get to grips with shouldering new parental responsibilities, I also believe that the EU should respect the principle of subsidiarity. It is not for the European Parliament to legislate in this area. Only a few weeks ago, the people of the United Kingdom, including those in my constituency, Northern Ireland, elected members to a new national Parliament at Westminster. It is there – not here in the corridors of Brussels and Strasbourg – that decisions around maternity and paternity leave provision should be taken and enforced. How often in recent times has this Parliament, through fascination with integration and harmonisation, forgotten that the greatest victories for our citizens come when local elected representatives recognise a local need and commit to bringing forward change to tackle it. That is a principle that is at the very core of the defence of national sovereignty – and is why I opposed this Motion."@en1
