"I voted in favour of this resolution objecting to an exemption for cadmium in illumination and display lighting applications. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive exemptions from the cadmium ban for certain LED lamps and displays were only supposed to last until 2014; however, the Commission wish to prolong this as to as far as 2018. I feel a future exemption by the Commission cannot be justified as the current one is already outdated and doesn’t recognise new developments in alternative, cadmium-free technologies which have already reached the EU market. Cadmium is a highly toxic and carcinogenic metal and this objection is in line with the aims of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive to minimise the dangers to human health and to the environment. I hope following the vote in favour of the Resolution the Commission will act quickly to reassess the exemption in light of the latest evidence and come to a new decision."@en1
