"I voted in favour of mandatory certification from all EU importers who source these minerals in conflict zones. The trade of conflict minerals that are mined in areas where there is either armed conflict or weak or non-existent governance or security continues to perpetuate a cycle of conflict and human rights abuses in many fragile areas of the world. When we in the EU buy products containing these minerals we are unwittingly helping to fuel conflict and displace indigenous peoples in many failed or failing states. This proposal will require all importers to certify that the minerals they import do not originate in conflict areas and demand mandatory compliance from all downstream companies. These companies will now be obliged to provide information on the steps they take to identify and address risks in their supply chains for the minerals and metals concerned."@en1
