"It is absolutely right that action be taken to ensure that the EU supply chain is both protected and regulated in terms of the trade of conflict minerals – which has been proven to fuel criminality and which devastates local communities in war-torn parts of Africa and South America. As with all legislation, however, there is a balance to be struck. Despite supporting the overarching premise of transparency, I believe it is vital to ensure that reputable firms with long-standing economic benefits are treated fairly and not put under undue regulatory burdens in order to fulfil these requirements. This I feel was the most consistent and proportionate basis upon which to approach this report. What is needed now is a rigorous review process, in order to safeguard businesses from disproportionate burdens, as well as clear and tangible efforts to ensure that smaller enterprises that stand to be affected have access to funding through relevant EU programmes to tackle the cost of gaining certification."@en1
