"Mr President, in a very interesting development last week, one member of the College of Commissioners said that one member of the Council perhaps should have read the press statement in its entirety before commenting. I can say this, but perhaps the Commissioner cannot.
What he was saying was that before making any pronouncements we should understand the Commission is in very difficult circumstances. While people are dying in the Mediterranean and while we are asking for action, we must understand also that the Commission talked about the causes. Many people are asking: why do we not talk about the causes? In fact they mention the causes. It is for us as politicians to convince our citizens that we will talk about the causes; we will talk about all of our citizens and we will do something in the Mediterranean and not let people die.
But we will also talk about many of the mechanisms, which we have talked about before. Jean Lambert said that we had created an asylum system; all of us here have legislated on this, but we have not implemented it. Therefore, let us turn our fire to where it should be: on the Council.
Here we have a Commission proposal which is comprehensive. But we have a choice. There is a low political priority of the tough choices, a resettlement. Let us have some perspective. Many of our colleagues on the other side of the house talk about Australia, a country which last year resettled 200 000 migrants and 14 000 refugees. We are talking about 20 000. So, perspective. Regarding humanity, thousands of people are dying in the Mediterranean, let us rescue them. Regarding the long-term: let us try to ensure that the Council has a high priority on the tough decisions and perhaps a little lower priority on the more easy media shots.
That is what we need to do in this Parliament. Let us get on with it and work in partnership."@en1
