"Mr President, civil war, deprivation and astounding levels of poverty have driven thousands of migrants to risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean to the EU. Traffickers and smugglers have willingly exploited the desperation of those fleeing their homes. As a result, many have perished. Some argue that military action targeting and destroying smugglers’ boats, despite the threat to migrants’ lives, will solve the problem. Bonkers! It is clear that military intervention in the Middle East and North Africa has only exacerbated social, economic and ethnic tensions in the region. Military intervention in Iraq and Libya have created both the conditions for further conflict from which people flee and the instability that allows smugglers and traffickers to operate with relative impunity. We need, without doubt, a humanitarian approach to deal with the horror of the floating cemetery that the Mediterranean has become. We do not need the ‘search and destroy’ operation that is being advocated. We need EU governments to increase the number of resettlement places, humanitarian admissions and visas for people in need of international protection. Finally, I want to distance myself and our Group from the shameful behaviour of some of the MEPs in this Chamber this morning who play political football with this issue which is, without doubt, one of the most disturbing issues that we have had to deal with. Shame on each and every one of you."@en1
