"Mr President, people with disabilities campaigned for this convention, so they need to be included in monitoring and implementation.
This resolution calls for the Commission formally to consult all relevant bodies, including Parliament, in its response to the Convention Committee. Now, more than ever, this inclusive approach is vital. The economic crisis and cuts to services have caused deterioration in the rights and independence of people with disabilities. Organisations caring for people with a learning disability, such as Destined, in Derry, are carrying out hugely valuable work in difficult circumstances. In Carlow and Kilkenny only 27% of people with a disability are at work, and people with disabilities are much more likely to live in poverty.
The situation is worsening due to Irish enforced austerity and British Tory cuts. Proper implementation of this convention can bring about a dramatic improvement in the lives of millions, and that is why we need to get this process right."@en1
