"While I would air caution against focusing efforts at solely green SMEs, I do welcome the emphasis given in this report to removing much of the unnecessary, burdensome regulation – which is often gold-plated – that acts as a market barrier for all small and medium—sized enterprises.
The reality is that the green sector presents great economic opportunities. This cannot be denied. Renewable energy production and storage technologies are coming more and more to the fore. It is right that SMEs that share this focus are afforded the capacity to get involved in research and innovation, as well as to access finance that is all important yet often so difficult for small businesses to gain.
While I would urge the UK Government to take primary responsibility for making the market a more hospitable place for these enterprises, I also believe that the EU, particularly through the latest round of Structural and Cohesion Funds, can play a pivotal role in providing SMEs with substantive opportunities to nurture and grow. This is especially important in my constituency, Northern Ireland, given the potential presented for projects to extend across our unique land border with the Republic of Ireland."@en1
