"The EU must take action on different levels to greatly reduce health—related infections, which are putting an enormous strain on healthcare systems. Adequate resources must be invested in patient safety and the fight against drug resistance. Between 8% and 12% of patients admitted to hospitals in the EU were affected by infections contracted in healthcare institutions. This figure equals 4.1 million patients across the EU, this is very alarming indeed and we must not let those responsible turn a blind eye. Patient Safety is a major concern in Ireland as well as in the rest of Europe. According to the Commission’s Public Consultation Report on Patient Safety and Quality of Care, only 17% of the participating groups answered positively on whether the Council’s Recommendations from 2009 had been fully implemented in their respective countries. These are warning signs for the EU to review the process and ensure a more successful implementation on patient safety measures."@en1
