"Madam President, I supported the report on safer healthcare in Europe. It is of concern that around 10% of patients admitted to hospitals in the EU suffer from adverse events while receiving healthcare. At the same time we have to recognise that antibiotic resistance is growing. This means that about 4.1 million people are suffering from healthcare-related illness, which causes huge personal distress and also a significant cost. The good news is that 30% of these illnesses can be avoided and the EU can play a crucial role in helping us achieve this, alleviating the burden placed on national health systems, which are already ailing in many EU Member States, not least the UK.
I therefore call on the Commission to promote the development of new antibiotics and regulate their use. Above all, it is crucial to realise that diseases do not stop at borders. Here the EU has the ability to achieve results that the single Member State cannot. So we have to ask the Commission to fully exploit this potential by developing initiatives to ensure better monitoring and data collection for healthcare-associated infections."@en1
