"Mr President, events of recent months in Nepal and the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean have reiterated the need for national governments in the EU to play a fair but effective role in supporting people living in poverty and disadvantage in less—developed countries across the world.
There is, of course, a balance to be struck. Combating poverty among our own citizens is not a selfish aim, and this should be prioritised. However, there is also a time to step back, reflect on the generally high standard of living that we enjoy, and commit to helping those less fortunate than the majority of our citizens.
This report calls on Member State to recommit to the 0.7% figure of GNI to development aid. This is a commitment that the UK’s national parliament supported in a vote earlier this year. We must take these matters seriously. However it also important to ensure that the allocation of this money is targeted, credible and based on identified need, in order to render it effective and conducive not only to supporting the end of poverty in the short term, but to equipping societies with the means to ensure lasting economic prosperity."@en1
