"I voted in favour of this motion for a resolution, which calls for an international response to the atrocities committed by Boko Haram. These actions are utterly deplorable and need to be condemned by all right-minded people. However, there were a number of roll call votes in which I tabled a negative vote as they were calling for a militaristic intervention. Sinn Féin has long rejected participation in any military alliance or foreign interference. We have consistently called for a greater focus on solving the causes of conflict, such as political and economic inequality and instability and the absence of democracy. Our own experience of conflict and conflict resolution has taught us that the path to peace is not to be found in increasing military intervention but in dialogue, inclusivity and equality. There is now a moral responsibility on us all, as societies, to show the same outrage at, and invest the same resources in addressing the causes and consequences of, an atrocity in Nigeria as we would if it were happening anywhere else, but that does not mean increased military intervention."@en1
