"I fully support this motion which seeks to ensure that the rule of law is given full process in the Maldives. The European Union strives to promote democracy and a pluralistic society around the world. It is therefore imperative that we oppose the manner of the conviction of former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, under anti-terrorist legislation and without access to a fair trial or the appropriate chance to lodge an appeal against the sentence.
We must also oppose the decision in the Maldives to break the moratorium on the death penalty in 2014. It is important that we oppose any attempt to reintroduce capital punishment, particularly in nations with legal systems that are still developing and may still be volatile and inconsistent."@en1
