"Nothing is more important than human life. The destruction of cultural heritage pales in comparison to other atrocities that ISIS has committed. It is, nevertheless, cultural cleansing and a war crime. Cultural heritage is a record of our common past and a way of understanding each other. Its destruction represents an attack on our shared civilization. It should therefore be treated as such, even if it is not equal to the human toll that ISIS has inflicted. It is further proof that ISIS has nothing to do with religion. Attacking schools, media and other places of culture – all symbols of freedom of thought and respect for cultural diversity – is part of a strategy to crush free thinking. We must all condemn these acts as war crimes, challenging ISIS’ narrative and working together to preserve our cultural heritage. We must cooperate against illegal trade in cultural property from the occupied territories, which directly funds terrorism. We must stand united in respect for humanity."@en1
