"I voted in favour of the joint motion for a resolution on the persecution of Christians around the world. There is no doubt that some Christian communities suffer persecution in different parts of the world – and this must be recognised and condemned. However, persecution of all and any religious minorities anywhere in the world must be condemned as unacceptable. Unfortunately many of the amendments submitted concerned the persecution of Christian minorities only. While I supported amendments that were factually accurate, it would have been preferable had the amendments concerned the persecution of all religious minorities, all around the world, rather than just Christians, particularly those in the Middle East.
Because of the large number of authoritarian regimes in the Middle East and the ongoing conflicts, the rights of many religious minorities, not only Christians, are poorly protected. Indeed, many different religious, ethnic, cultural and linguistic minorities, as well as the LGBT community and refugees, are all extremely vulnerable to violence and oppression. Sinn Féin fully supports the right of all people to freedom of religion and belief, and takes the view that all minorities and vulnerable people need to be strongly protected in law."@en1
