"We welcome these proposed reforms to the HYPERLINK "http://ec.europa.eu/enlargement/policy/glossary/terms/saa_en.htm" Stabilisation and Association Agreements and the Interim Agreement in the Western Balkans region. The extension of Autonomous Trade Measures (ATMs) will continue to offer economic and political support to the Western Balkan countries, while including a key human rights clause, of which labour rights conditionality forms part, attached to the trade measures. The S&D Group has been at the forefront in demanding this.
We also support proposals to allow Parliament a greater role in scrutiny of the Western Balkan countries’ compliance with the human rights clause, and in ATM suspension if necessary. It is hoped that Bosnia and Herzegovina will be able to acknowledge the accession of Croatia to the EU, so as to avoid ATM suspension, and we urge the Commission to maintain dialogue on this issue. In the long term, however, we cannot support any third country discriminating against EU Member States, and the ability to use the suspension clause is necessary."@en1
