"Progress on investigating the Rana Plaza building collapse and on ensuring satisfactory levels of health and safety at work remains disappointing, as does the Bangladesh Government’s reluctance to pave the way for trade union formation. Democracy is declining fast in Bangladesh: elections at all levels are held without full participation in a free and fair process. The EU cannot expect to achieve fundamental workers’ rights in an environment where political governance has broken down, widespread human rights violations prevail, and media freedom and democratic rights are curbed. There is a serious democratic deficit in Bangladesh. For example, in the city elections in Dhaka and Chittagong, on 28 April 2015, media reports alleged that Awami League activists attacked Opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s vehicle, and serious allegations have been made that these elections were rigged in favour of Government-supported candidates. Attacks on the Swedish Ambassador to Dhaka as he was observing the elections are also a matter of concern. Therefore, it is now important to address the issue of a free, fair and inclusive national election. The lack of free elections is the root cause of the political turmoil in Bangladesh. Without sound political governance in Bangladesh, securing workers’ rights and safer workplaces will be difficult."@en1
