"in writing. ‒ Notwithstanding the fact that some improvements have been made since the Rana Plaza disaster two years ago, we still have a long way to go in securing decent working conditions for the four million workers of the textile industry in Bangladesh.
That is why I supported this resolution, and more particularly the call on the Bangladeshi government to fully reform the Labour Act and ensure safe buildings and robust health and safety legislation, which can support vital jobs in the garments industry. Furthermore, the government needs to ensure that workers can make use of their right to form trade unions. It is unacceptable that members of trade unions continue to suffer discrimination and dismissal to this very day.
It is also high time international brands start taking responsibility and pay the outstanding 8.5 million USD in compensation they still owe to the survivors and the relatives of the victims.
Last but not least, Rana Plaza made clear that access to information in the garment sector remains the most important obstacle to tackling human rights violations in the global supply chain. That is why it is crucial that a legal obligation of due diligence is imposed on EU companies outsourcing production to third countries."@en1
