"Alcohol is the leading cause of ill health and premature death for the core of the EU´s working-age population (25-59). The social cost attributable to alcohol is an estimated EUR 156 billion a year, as it is linked to public health issues such as obesity and to other social problems including family breakdown and violence. Reducing alcohol-induced harm is therefore an active investment in our economies as well as a means by which we can achieve a better quality of life for all European citizens. With the recent publication of the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill, Ireland is now leading the way in addressing this issue and Europe needs to follow suit. I believe that this resolution strikes the right balance between the public health promotion and the recognition of national cultural differences in relation to alcohol consumption. I have therefore voted in favour of this resolution."@en1
