"I voted in favour of the Willmott report because I believe consumers have a right to know. Alcohol is the third-biggest cause of preventable death and disease in Europe and is a risk factor for over 60 chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and liver disease, and is also linked to obesity. Europe has the highest rate of alcohol consumption in the world, yet the previous EU strategy on addressing alcohol-related harm ended in 2012 and has not been renewed. Clear and honest labelling, which is supported by many brewers in Europe, will now allow people to access the information they need so they are able to make an informed choice when they consume alcohol. Tackling alcohol-related harm should be a priority, and I hope the Commission will take this as a cue to finally come forward with a new strategy to make headway on this crucial issue."@en1
