"Madam President, I voted in favour of EU-wide labelling on the calorie content of alcohol beverages and also supported the need for an EU-wide label warning pregnant women not to consume alcohol.
I consider that this is a very important issue, especially when we look at the consequences of foetal alcohol syndrome. Indeed in Ireland, when we export alcoholic beverages to the US, they contain that label of a pregnant women with a line through her, but we do not have it at home. That makes absolutely no sense. I personally have an aversion to the nanny state, but I think that putting information on bottles containing alcoholic beverages is a sensible and reasonable idea.
I also think it is reasonable to consider labelling which will alert consumers to the dangers of drink-driving. In Ireland we have had some success – our roads are somewhat safer – because of a sustained campaign and crackdown on drink-driving. Labelling is just one possibility but, given the often horrific consequences of drink-driving, I think we should consider all reasonable alternatives."@en1
