"Madam President, I voted in favour of this report on the EU alcohol strategy. It is vitally important that Member States take the necessary steps to tackle the causes and effect of alcohol consumption and addiction. Unfortunately in Ireland there are many families affected, directly or indirectly, by alcohol addiction. As my colleague has said, education campaigns and the availability of information play a key role in addressing this problem. However, self-regulation has failed. Such campaigns are particularly important in informing young people of the implications of alcohol consumption for their health and well-being. Indeed, we see a number of products, such as alcopops, that are marketed towards young people. From my work on the Tobacco Products Directive, I am very aware of the effects the labelling of tobacco products can have, so it is encouraging to see a reference to the nutritional labelling regulation in this strategy."@en1
