"In the UK, where under-25s are now three times more likely to be unemployed than the rest of the population, adoption of the European Youth Guarantee is critical. Without a trained, supported and resilient young workforce, growing a strong economy will be merely a pipedream.
In 2013, Tees Valley and County Durham was identified as one of UK five regions with unemployment levels so high that they qualify for an additional £20 million worth of EU funding, however we have seen that urgent investment in our young delayed as a result of the UK government's incompetence.
Today, I supported the European Commission's proposal to boost the Youth Employment Initiative (YEI), which will allow the frontloading of European Social Fund co-financing to support the role out of the YEI. But I have also raised regional concerns directly with the Commission about the speed with which money will need to be spent before 2018. We want sustainable solutions not a flash-flood after a drought.
As Labour MEP for one of the worst affected regions in the UK, I have made tackling youth unemployment a top priority. It should be the priority of every politician to fight this scourge on our societies.: see Minutes: see Minutes: see Minutes: see Minutes"@en1
