"President, I find it completely unacceptable that unemployment strikes 5 million young people across Europe and 743,000 in the UK. In my region of the West Midlands, over 16% of people aged between 16 and 24 don't have a job.
I therefore voted in favour of amending the European Social Fund which would allow for an increase in pre-financing as part of the Youth Employment Initiative, meaning that previously agreed funding could be accessed at the beginning of a scheme to allow for quick implementation. This would help to ensure every young person gets a job, an apprenticeship, traineeship or professional training within four months of becoming unemployed.
I find it deeply disappointing that David Cameron chose not implement the Youth Guarantee, using the money to prop up his heavily criticised Youth Contract as part of his Work Programme, which delivered less than 13% of the 160,000 promised work placements and offered a job to less than 1 in 3 of young people referred to it.
We cannot afford to waste more time when the future of our young people is at stake."@en1
