"Madam President, the looting and destruction of ancient religious and cultural sites in Syria and Iraq by ISIS and other extreme groups is simply despicable. Just last month, Da’esh demolished ancient cultural heritage sites in Northern Iraq, including statues in the Mosul Museum, the classical site of Hatra and the Assyrian capitals of Nineveh, Nimrud and Khorsabad. In my capacity as Iraq delegation chairman, I call on the Iraqi and Syrian authorities to improve their legal and administrative frameworks in order to prevent the illicit trafficking of stolen artefacts, as has been mentioned here, and cut off funds for terrorism. International partners also need to redouble their efforts to assist in documenting the historical treasures of this ancient civilisation. It is imperative that a clear record of these artefacts be preserved. Finally, the major damage already inflicted on Iraqi and Assyrian sites is one of the worst cultural heritage disasters of all time, according to a Yale professor. With this in mind, the perpetuators of this vandalism must be stopped now."@en1
