"Mr President, I voted for the amendment that deleted the sunset clause on the Low Volatility Net Asset Value (LVNAV) money market funds. This would see the LVNAVs lapse five years after the entry into force of this regulation. Instead, I fully support a review of the LVNAVs. We need a balanced review clause because we do not need to predetermine the outcome of this review before it happens.
I have to declare an interest here because of the 500 billion money market funds in the EU, 400 billion of those are domiciled in Ireland.
But it is not a vote on that basis alone. As I said, we need a proper review after five years to see the impact of LVNAVs and to see what the implications will be for the phasing out of LVNAVs. We could have a situation where there might be a significant outflow of funds and capital from European funds and also from Ireland. We need to answer those questions before we make a decision on a sunset clause."@en1
