"Mr President, I stand to give my condolences to the friends and families of those affected by the tragic earthquake in Nepal. Countless people have lost their loved ones and I share their grief.
Knowing the country and the people well – as a former Chair of this House’s South Asia Delegation I was indeed heavily involved in the dialogue on transition to democracy in Nepal – I do think that it is apt that we are showing our solidarity with the one-minute silence.
I also welcome the EUR 3 million in emergency aid released by the Commission for this tragedy, in addition to assistance offered by the EU Member States and the deployment of experts. It is essential that these Member States work and coordinate effectively, with the Commission and also with the other donors, to ensure that we have learnt the lessons from the past; for example, in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in 2010. These resources must be used in the most effective way. Chief amongst them was the failure to coordinate and I do think it is important ..."@en1
