"Madam President, the fishing industry faces a similar challenge to many other sectors throughout Europe at the present and especially in the agri—food business. It is the challenge of doing more for less, and we need to create a more sustainable and prosperous fishing industry that protects our fish stocks. But Europe can only do so much.
As other speakers have said, the reform of the common fisheries policy (CFP) in December has put an obligation on fishermen to land their catches, ending the practice of discarding. This is what was asked for, this is what was requested and this is what has now been done. Yes, it may have taken a long time but then sometimes to get things right does take time. So I hope the long-term prospects for the industry will be quite good.
I am extremely pleased that Parliament has been able to secure the much-needed flexibility which was, in my opinion, required and I welcome the transition period because it does take time to adapt to the future, and I would like to give this a fair wind and hope it succeeds and brings better times for the fishing industry."@en1
