"Mr President, nearly 26 000 people die in road accidents in Europe every year and, if you have ever been upside down in your car with your family – like I was last summer – then of course you want the emergency services to get to you as quickly as possible. There have been concerns in this file about data privacy and some of these have been addressed during the trialogue negotiations, but there are still real concerns about the intrusiveness of having a microphone link directly into your car which you cannot switch off. Maybe we should have had a more voluntary measure. It is also very prescriptive in the nature of its technology, and I am concerned that we have not left it open for smart new innovations, because it will be expensive. It is estimated to be about EUR 100 per car and, more importantly, there is the cost of the infrastructure behind it. Unfortunately, this money then comes from other lifesaving measures where the experts tell me it could have been better spent on improving the road system or more research so that the car did not go upside down in the first place. Therefore, although the rapporteur has done a great job in trying to improve the legislation, I still think we could have made it smarter, better and more voluntary and got more money into stopping any accidents."@en1
