"I supported this resolution as I would like to recognise and commemorate the genocide of Roma during World War II. This Memorial Day is paramount for providing Roma people with restitution where appropriate for the atrocities committed against them by the Nazi and other regimes and their allies during WW II.
We need to take responsibility for our failure as a society to stand up to this discrimination and recognise the rights of these individuals. It is time to provide the necessary structures for individuals to invoke their rights and ensure that specific measures for women’s rights and gender mainstreaming are included in the National Roma Integration Strategies (NRIS). It is time to call on the Commission to consider children a priority when implementing the EU framework for National Roma Strategies and it is time for Member States to effectively implement the Council Directive 200/43/EC that reinforces the principle of equal treatment between persons, irrespective of racial or ethnic origin, in order to prevent and eliminate discrimination against Roma, in particular in employment, education and access to housing."@en1
