"Following debate within our political group, the ECR has not placed a whip on this resolution but left individual members to exercise a free vote. I voted against the resolution, not because I do not have great sympathy for the thousands that died through neglect and illness or were massacred during the upheavals in Turkey, in a state of war in 1915. The atrocities are fully acknowledged by the Turkish authorities who have consistently offered to open their archives for scrutiny by a joint commission of Turkish and Armenian scholars in order finally to resolve controversy.
My objection is to the use of the highly contentious term "genocide" and a politically-motivated initiative, primarily designed to offend and provoke Turkey. At this time, we need Turkey to remain a good ally in NATO and in the fight against terrorism and jihadism. And we need to send messages of reconciliation. It is not helpful to incite further malice and to try and push Turkey away."@en1
