"The EU is a major provider of employment in Europe and a dark shadow would be cast over its accomplishments on upholding high social and labour standards if it would fail to apply these to its own employment policies. However, the EU’s work on ensuring equal employment for disabled people and their families shouldn’t stop at its own institutions. Today, fifteen million children in the EU, 700 000 of whom are living in the UK, have special educational needs. While these children risk being denied equal access to after-school care because the majority of existing facilities are unable to accommodate their requirements, their parents incur higher than average childcare costs and risk being denied equal access to employment opportunities, as they are required to take more time off work to care for their child. The fundamental issue is simple – should the EU provide a level playing field for all in the employment market? The answer is a firm ‘yes’, and the EU needs to step up its game to make sure this is adequately reflected in its policies."@en1
