"Mr President, colleagues have eloquently stated that, 100 years ago, Ottoman Turkey carried out what has been described as a systematic genocide. That was a century ago, but in today’s Turkey the government still refuses to apologise adequately and properly to the Armenian people. In today’s Turkey there are 21 journalists in jail and up to 150 awaiting trial. In today’s Turkey the opposition is liable to arrest. In today’s Turkey the government is attempting to control access to the Internet. Despite this blatant rejection of democratic values, Turkey is nevertheless an EU candidate country that has even been allocated more than EUR 4 billion in EU Pre-Accession Assistance. The Commission should think again. Moreover those parties, especially the British Labour Party and the British Conservatives, who are cheerleaders for Turkey’s candidacy, should start to be honest instead of blathering the platitudes that we heard from two of their representatives earlier."@en1
