"There were positive aspects to this report including the focus on tax transparency; However, much of what was being proposed lacked any real substance or force. If there was a serious concern with effecting real positive change in this field, the proposals would not have been a simple re-packaging of a failed economic paradigm. Instead, there would have been concrete measures put in place in order to move towards real tax transparency. For my party, tax evasion and cross-border tax fraud is a major concern as untaxed income is considerably reducing our national tax revenues. As Ireland tries to find a sustainable economic recovery it is crucial that we develop a healthier reputation as a transparent place to pay tax and face up to any changes necessary to create transparent global tax system where multinationals cannot escape their duties to countries, including developing countries. There were also objectionable provisions in this report, which attempted to interfere with Member States’ taxation policies. Direct taxation is a matter of national competency and the EU has no role in dictating or interfering with Irish Taxation Policies or indeed in other Member States tax policies. It was for these reasons that I abstained."@en1
