"It is clear that Ukraine is facing a deteriorating humanitarian crisis and it is widely recognised that ongoing conflict there has caused this situation to become progressively worse. In this context it is disappointing that the Commission proposal does not include a proposal for a political agreement for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Furthermore, the Macro-Financial Assistance of EUR 1.8 billion proposed by the Commission is tied to austerity through Macro-economic adjustments and structural ‘reform’.
The proposal does not say how such structural ‘reform’ will improve the economy of Ukraine, or how it will impact on its people, as it currently endures a conflict that has seen approximately 1.2 million of its citizens internally displaced.
Sinn Féin welcomes efforts to assist Ukraine in dealing with its humanitarian situation. Indeed I voted in favour of amendments improving the Commission proposal. However, given that the proposal is fundamentally based on a flawed austerity model, which I believe will not improve the humanitarian situation for the people of Ukraine, I abstained on the overall legislative resolution."@en1
