"I voted in favour of this report. This report is concerned with the re-integration into the labour market of an estimated 958 workers of 16 enterprises operating in the programming and broadcasting sector in the Greek region of Attica. This is a particularly important issue for me, as only recently in my own constituency and my home town of Carrickmacross, 140 workers were made redundant from our local BOSE factory. This has had a devastating effect on the workers, their families and the wider community. We do not yet know if an application for funding from the European Globalisation Fund will be made in this instance, but adequate support for the workers in retraining and up—skilling must be provided in any case. The Fund plays a vital role in ameliorating what is a very distressing situation for workers who have found their whole livelihoods placed into disarray. In what is often a very harrowing situation, it is important to focus on the positive and constructive options which are available. However, I would like to add a general qualification that no government should use this fund as justification for making workers redundant."@en1
