"Sea Bass are currently in serious decline and there is a vital need to address the way in which they are fished to prevent the complete collapse of the stock.
I welcomed the European Commission's recent emergency measures to protect Sea Bass during the crucial spawning season - but having to resort to reactive emergency measures only served as a reminder that we need real pre-emptive and evidence-based policy-making for Sea Bass.
Recovering Bass stocks in Europe is in the long term interest of fishers - but without a long term plan we risk requiring to implement emergency measures on a reoccurring basis - or worse – total stock collapse.
Protecting Sea bass is not just important for commercial fishers - but also for recreational sea anglers - who contribute an estimated 200€ million a year to western Europe's coastal communities.
I therefore support the resolution's call for a longer term strategy to address the ongoing issues and call on the European Commission to propose a multiannual management plan for the stocks of Sea Bass."@en1
