"This report rightly throws a spotlight on fundamental rights abuses in an array of political contexts, and the very extent of these problems should send a message that not enough is being done to uphold them.
We think of those Christians and members of religious minorities in areas of Middle East, and indeed right across the globe, who face persecution both through violence and institutionalised barriers to work, education and health.
We think of the many more situations where freedoms to associate, to speak freely, and to report events have been withheld to the detriment of democracy and decency.
And in my own constituency, I think of the efforts being made to eliminate the freedom to confer with one’s conscience in the running of private business.
These problems are serious but they are not insurmountable. At the very heart of any solution must be the principle that the rights of some in society cannot be secured by removing the rights of others.
And that embodies why I cannot support this report - because of the insatiable and unacceptable desire to toss away the right to life of the unborn child."@en1
