"As an MEP for Northern Ireland, I have seen at first hand the vital role played by our armed forces in keeping our people and our communities safe from terrorism and other threats to security. I am immensely proud of our servicemen and women, who make so many sacrifices and put themselves on the line to serve their country both at home and abroad. And that this why it saddens me when I see reports such as this one calling for a pooling of resources, a coordination of defence budgets and most unhelpful of all – a permanent military operational headquarters in Europe. National governments must retain complete sovereignty over matters of national security. This means spending of at least 2 % of GDP on defence. It means the capacity to develop new and advanced defence technologies without intrusion or limit. Of course, there does remain room and indeed a need for cooperation between EU Member States and further afield. The international coalition formed to fight ISIS is indicative of this. However, this does not in any way strengthen the argument that we would be best served by an integrated, federalist and diluted defence agenda."@en1
