"The Russian Federation has destabilized its surrounding region, provoking a conflict in eastern Ukraine and supplying the ‘separatists’ with arms. I have been highly critical of Russian involvement in Ukraine and have repeatedly called on Moscow to fulfil its international commitments, including the upholding of political rights and freedom of speech. The recent political assassination of Boris Nemtsov, a vocal critic of Putin and an influential opposition leader, shows how dangerous the political situation within Russia has become. Russia, as a member of the UN, has an international duty to protect political rights – an excuse ironically used by Putin last February to justify the Russian invasion and annexation of Crimea. The rights of Crimean Tatars have been heavily violated in Crimea since Russia’s illegal annexation. Russia sadly is a nation where political figures, journalists, and civilians fear censure, imprisonment, or death for criticizing the government, so has no right to use its ‘international commitment to protect political rights and the freedom of speech’ as a justification for the military invasion of the territory of a sovereign nation."@en1
