"Mr President, I am pleased that Parliament voted on this resolution on the fight against child sexual abuse on the Internet, because it is critical that we act efficiently and decisively to eradicate this horrible practice that ruins the lives of millions of children worldwide every year.
In the UK, it is estimated that a staggering 1 in 58 children will suffer contact sexual abuse before turning 18, with approximately 10 000 new child victims being reported each year. As Internet availability grows worldwide, online child abuse is increasing at an alarming rate.
Online child sex offenders commit their atrocities and offences across borders; therefore we cannot let borders stop us from stopping them. The EU directive on combating this is crucial. Harmonising criminal offences in this field is also critical, and we must ensure that we have common minimum sanctions."@en1
