"Mr President, I think this is an excellent document and it summarises very clearly what needs to be achieved. One point I would like to highlight in particular is paragraph 8, which says that Members of the Council should only come from States that uphold respect for human rights. I think that is something we should certainly push, because it would make a very important diplomatic statement. Secondly, one has to ask the question, are violations of human rights lessening or growing in the world? Certainly the barbarity seems to be growing, when in recent times we have had beheadings, public floggings, burning people alive, and sometimes this is done in the name of religion. I think we should recall what King Abdullah II of Jordan said, that ʽno religion espouses hate, religion is about love and respectʼ. I think that is something that needs to be brought home to many people. I also agree with what has been said about women’s rights, and also in relation to culture and sports events – we can move there."@en1
