"Mr President, in 2006 I enjoyed a pub lunch in London with Boris Nemtsov. Also present at that lunch were Alexander Litvinenko and Boris Berezovsky. These three had certain things in common. They were political opponents of President Putin and are now all dead. Two were murdered and one died in suspicious circumstances.
Mr Nemtsov, of course, is just the latest in a long line of politicians and journalists murdered in Russia and abroad. The finger of suspicion and the trail of
polonium—210 always leads back to President Putin. Any Russian brave enough to oppose Putin’s gangster regime risks their liberty and life. How can we support them? The hope of democracy in Russia is almost crushed. The world has to understand what it is dealing with in Mr Putin. The best short-term hope for everyone is that some of his more moderate colleagues can be prevailed upon to depose him, and the West must encourage them to do this."@en1
