"I abstained on this resolution as my party's focus is primarily on the safety and well-being of the child. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that there are genuine measures to protect children, but we must ensure such measures are appropriate and proportionate; to ensure that measures protecting children are balanced with children's rights to access information on the internet and utilise it for educational and communication purposes; to protect fundamental rights of people in relation to internet freedom; and to protect against the privatisation of internet security/policing. The resolution that we tabled was child-centred and protected the best interests of the child. Moreover, unlike the resolutions from the other groups, the GUE/NGL resolution respects legal due process and the separation of powers, balanced with the protection of children's rights and citizens' fundamental and democratic rights. For this reason we abstained on the joint motion for a resolution."@en1
