"2014 marked the opening of negotiations between Serbia and the EU, with the first Inter-governmental conference taking place in January of last year. This is a welcome step forward, which I hope will add momentum to enacting the comprehensive actions plans that have been set out, particularly regarding Chapters 23 and 24. I am pleased to note that the process of normalising relations with Kosovo is continuing, which is particularly important in the negotiations bearing in mind the added conditions of Chapter 35. As rapporteur for Montenegro I would like to raise attention to the recent commitment between Serbia and Montenegro to increase co-operation regarding security and policing. Agreements have been reached on opening up further border crossings, with increased border security co-operation, as well as working together to fight cross-border organised crime and corruption. The continuing links with United Russia, the high-profile visit of President Putin in late October 2014 and the failure to join in the European-wide sanctions against Russia do remain of concern, however. 2014 marks only the beginning of negotiations and there is a long road ahead. Nevertheless, Serbia remains politically committed to EU membership and has set out an ambitious road-map to achieving it."@en1
