"The contribution of the European Parliament to the 2014 progress report on Serbia underlines the agreement of most members with the decision of the European Council to launch accession negotiations. The many amendments to this resolution tabled this year led to a balanced result. I was therefore pleased to vote for the resolution. I am particularly supportive of the points in the resolution recalling that the EU has placed the rule of law at the centre of our enlargement policy. In addition, I fully support the calls for further early action in the area of ensuring judicial independence and protecting fundamental rights in Serbia, including trade union, equalities and minorities’ rights, and free speech. While recognising and welcoming efforts made by Serbia aiming to restructure public administration, I was glad that my own amendment reinforcing the importance of workers’ rights and the significance of public sector employment for Serbian citizens and their wellbeing was incorporated into the final text. Furthermore, it is important that we agreed on wording urging the Serbian Government to ensure an accessible education system and prioritise the provision of work and training opportunities for young people."@en1
