"As a long friend of Macedonia it is disappointing that negotiations are still to be opened, particularly bearing in mind its strong and existing alignment with the acquis. As noted in the resolution, this is now the ninth time Parliament has called upon the Council to open negotiations. The Thessaloniki Agenda states that all Western Balkan countries have a European Union perspective and Macedonia should prove no exception. I welcome therefore the resolution’s call for the High Representative to support the UN’s Special Representative, Matthew Nimetz, in finding a mutually acceptable solution to the unresolved name issue, and its reference that bilateral issues should not prevent the accession process of potential members. This issue aside I welcome the calls regarding potential NATO membership. However, I do think it necessary to remind Macedonia of its commitments concerning Chapter 31 of the acquis and therefore note its failure to join in applying EU-wide sanctions against Russia. Many reforms will be needed before Macedonia can join the EU, especially considering recent allegations of electoral malpractice and corruption, but it is difficult to encourage these whilst the accession process remains stalled. I hope therefore that next year I will be able to welcome the opening of negotiations."@en1
