"I abstained on the 2014 Progress Report on Macedonia as I feel there are contradictory aspects to it. The report calls for the authorities and civil society to overcome ethnic and identity divisions in Macedonia. I welcome this. In Ireland we are still working towards national reconciliation and respect for all our identities. Recently at our annual party conference, the Sinn Féin Chairperson, speaking about the Irish peace process, said: "There should be a fearless resolve to dismantle barriers and build bridges by all sides. Those who want to push the Peace Process backwards, and directly or implicitly oppose reconciliation should be challenged, without fear or favour." Unfortunately the report also calls for Macedonia's accession to NATO. I believe the expansion of NATO is contrary to the spirit of peace and reconciliation. Hence my abstention."@en1
