"I abstained in this vote. While there were many positive aspects to this report, I have serious concerns in relation to the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor's Office and the parameters of its remit.
The rationale for the development of EU criminal law is to combat transnational organised crime. The intention is of course to be welcomed but not at the expense of subjugating the existing judicial systems of individual Member States to the interests of the EU and undermining those systems.
However, the overall intention of this report is to be welcomed, which is the fight against fraud and other irregularities.
This is particularly the case now, more than ever, in this era of austerity.
Unfortunately the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2014-2020 represented the first cut to the EU's seven-year budget in 57 years.
I am glad to see some recognition in this report of the need for administrative capacity - in detecting fraudulent activity.
To detect and prevent financial irregularities, Member States and the EU need to adequately train and resource people and, in this regard, more needs to be done."@en1
