"I voted against the guidelines for the 2016 budget because I felt that there was insufficient reference within the guidelines to reductions in areas of spending which have consistently failed to promote sustainable economic growth, such as in the Common Agricultural Policy direct subsidy. Although there has been a welcome reorientation of spending towards research and support for young unemployed people, much more needs to be done to focus European spending on measures which will lead to an increase in decent, quality jobs, particularly for young people. There are many examples within the South-East of England of European funding projects promoting sustainable growth, and we should be strongly backing such projects, by removing funding from areas like the CAP and the wasteful second seat of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. I will continue to work with my colleagues within the European Parliament to encourage a reorientation of the EU budget towards growth-promoting areas of expenditure."@en1
